Nigeria Alerte de sécurité

Fuel shortages reported amid anti-police brutality protests on October 27; transportation and other disruptions possible

TIMEFRAME expected from 28/10/2020, 12h00 until 30/10/2020, 11h59 (Africa/Lagos). COUNTRY/REGION Nigeria

Petrol shortages were reported as long queues formed at gas stations across Nigeria on Tuesday, October 27, amid anti-police brutality protests. Reportedly, the protests demanding the end of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) that have been taking place in the past two weeks and subsequent curfews imposed by authorities affected the supply of fuel countrywide. The state oil firm, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), has advised against panic buying of fuel and indicated on Tuesday that supply chains are expected to resume as normal within the next two days.

Associated demonstrations over the shortage cannot be ruled out and should be avoided; clashes between security forces and protesters are also possible if gatherings are held.

Individuals present in Nigeria are advised to fill up vehicles whenever fuel is available, ensure sufficient fuel reserves before all long journeys, and expect longer waiting times at gas stations. Keep in mind that crime rates tend to rise after nightfall in areas without street lighting, and be cautious when driving or crossing streets if traffic signals are not functioning. Individuals throughout the country are advised to avoid all demonstrations and follow any instructions issued by local authorities.
