Thailand Alerte de sécurité

Unidentified gunman wound navy soldier during shooting incident in Narathiwat province on November 3; heightened security presence likely over the near term

TIMEFRAME expected from 3/11/2020, 12h00 until 5/11/2020, 11h59 (Asia/Bangkok). COUNTRY/REGION Bacho district (Narathiwat province), Narathiwat province

A navy soldier was wounded by an unidentified gunman in Bacho district (Narathiwat province) on Tuesday morning, November 3. The incident occurred at around 06:00 (local time) in tambon Taluwo. The soldier was riding his motorcycle when two men on another motorcycle followed him and the one riding pillion opened fire. No group has claimed responsibility for the shooting and it has not been confirmed if the incident is linked to the ongoing separatist insurgency in Thailand's southern provinces. Police have launched an investigation into the incident.

Security operations are expected in the area over the near term. Low-level attacks are likely to continue across Thailand's southernmost provinces over the medium term.

An ethnic and religious separatist insurgency is ongoing in the four southernmost provinces of Thailand - Songkhla, Pattani, Narathiwat, and Yala - which make up the historical Malay Patani region and are located in the extreme south of the country along the Thai-Malaysian border. Since 2001, over 7000 people have been killed, including local residents, civil servants, in addition to others perceived to have links to the Thai government, and many more wounded in near-daily clashes and assassinations.

Those in Narathiwat province are advised to monitor developments to the situation, remain vigilant for militant activity, report all suspicious objects or behavior to the police, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities. Travelers in Thailand's deep south are advised to maintain good situational awareness at all times and subject all overland travel to comprehensive security risk management protocols. Any suspicious items or activity should be immediately reported to security forces.
