Nigeria: Anti-police violence protest scheduled in Lagos on November 7

Nigeria Alerte de sécurité

Anti-police violence protest scheduled in Lagos on November 7; avoid all demonstrations as a precaution

TIMEFRAME expected from 5/11/2020, 12h00 until 8/11/2020, 11h59 (Africa/Lagos). COUNTRY/REGION Lagos

An anti-police brutality demonstration is scheduled to take place in Lagos on Saturday, November 7. Participants of the demonstration are scheduled to gather at the Allen junction in Ikeja at approximately 09:00 (local time). The protest is expected to be well attended.

A heightened security presence and associated disruptions to transportation are likely in the vicinity of the gathering in the near term.

A series of protests organized through the #EndSARS social media campaign have been held across Nigeria over the past few months and intensified in recent days, with demonstrations having led to fatal clashes between protesters and security forces. Unrest has continued despite an announcement by President Muhammadu Buhari that the controversial SARS police unit would be disbanded and replaced by a new agency called SWAT, a move which protesters have rejected.

Those in Lagos are advised to anticipate disruptions, minimize time spent in the vicinity of the gathering, and heed all instructions issued by local authorities.
