Nigeria: Anti-police brutality protests possible November 9

Nigeria Alerte de sécurité

Anti-police brutality protests possible nationwide on November 9; avoid protests as a precaution

TIMEFRAME expected from 9/11/2020, 12h00 until 10/11/2020, 11h59 (Africa/Lagos). COUNTRY/REGION Nigeria

Reports indicate that fresh anti-police brutality protests have been planned nationwide on Monday, November 9, after a court order allowed the Central Bank of Nigeria to freeze the accounts of 19 individuals and a public affairs company linked to the recent #EndSARS protests. Police have reportedly warned that no protests will be allowed, and Lagos' state governor has advised residents against taking part. Different groups, including Muslim Rights Concern (Muric), have also discouraged people from participating in fresh protests. Although specific locations have not been confirmed, protests are to be expected in major urban centers across Nigeria, including Lagos.

Continued protests against police brutality are likely over the near term. A heightened security presence and associated disruptions to transportation are likely in the vicinity of gatherings.

A series of protests organized through the #EndSARS social media campaign have been held across Nigeria over the past few months and intensified in recent days, with demonstrations having led to fatal clashes between protesters and security forces. Unrest has continued despite an announcement by President Muhammadu Buhari that the controversial SARS police unit would be disbanded and replaced by a new agency called SWAT, a move which protesters have rejected.

Those in Nigeria are advised to anticipate disruptions, minimize time spent in the vicinity of the gathering, and heed all instructions issued by local authorities.
