The Zamfara State Commissioner of Security and Home Affairs', Abubakar Dauran, convoy was reportedly caught in a crossfire between two groups of bandits at Dogon Karfi, GidanJaji, in the Zurmi Local Government Area (LGA) in Zamfara state on Monday, November 9. The driver of the vehicle was killed in the incident which occurred along the Zurmi-Jibiya road. Reports indicate that the state commissioner was returning from Katsina State after handing over 26 kidnapped minors who had been rescued to the Katsina State government.

On Sunday, November 8, the Zamfara state governor Bello Matawalle, reportedly secured the release of 26 girls abducted from Faskari LGA (Katsina state) following negotiations with the bandits by the Commissioner for Security and Home Affairs. Local sources suggest that the victims were allegedly released without payment of ransom.

A heightened security presence is to be expected in the area in the near term. Bandit attacks are possible in the area.

Context

Bandit attacks have become an increasing threat in northwest Nigeria in recent years amid rising communal tensions. High-profile security operations have previously had little success in reducing violence in the northwest.
