France Alerte de sécurité

Police fire tear gas during clashes with high school students holding protests in Saint-Nazaire (Pays de la Loire region) on November 10; further unrest likely over the near term

TIMEFRAME expected from 10/11/2020, 12h00 until 12/11/2020, 11h59 (Europe/Paris). COUNTRY/REGION Saint Nazaire (Loire-Atlantique department)

Police fired tear gas as they clashed with student protesters in Saint-Nazaire (Pays de la Loire region) on Tuesday, November 10. Around 300 students gathered outside Aristide Briand high school on Tuesday morning to support an ongoing teacher's strike over health protocols in place at education establishments in response to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. Two previous mobilizations at the school on Thursday, November 5, and Friday, November 6, also resulted in clashes with law enforcement. Around 80 police were deployed to meet the latest gathering and they resorted to deploying tear gas as projectiles were hurled at them during checks and searches at the school complex. At least 17 people were reported to have been arrested in association with the demonstrations, some of which were for possession of weapons during searches carried out by police.

Further protests and resultant unrest are likely to continue in the vicinity of the school in the coming days. The demonstrations are expected to be accompanied by a heightened security presence and could lead to localized disruptions to transport.

Those in Saint-Nazaire are advised to monitor developments and avoid the vicinity of the school due to the potential for further clashes. Travelers should avoid related protests and political gatherings as a precaution and heed any directives issued by local authorities.
