Thursday, November 19, and Friday, November 20, have been designated as special public holidays by the Thai government, creating a four-day holiday weekend. The holidays have been approved in an effort to boost the country's economy following months of reduced growth due to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. The government had previously canceled or postponed a number of public holidays during the first wave of the pandemic in April and May, the November 19-20 break, as well as a similar two-day holiday on December 10 and 11, is intended to replace some of these.
Travel disruptions are likely at airports and other major transport hubs across Thailand ahead of and during the November holiday period, and many roads are likely to be congested. Some transport hubs are also likely to see an increased security presence at peak times due to the heightened risk of petty crime.
Those in Thailand are advised to monitor developments and consider postponing travel during the holiday period to minimise the risk of disruptions to itineraries.
