Violent protests ongoing in Cele-Festac area of Lagos November 17
Event
Violent protests were reported in the vicinity of Murtala Muhammed International Airport (LOS) in Lagos on Wednesday morning, November 18. Motorcycle riders (known locally as Okada riders) reportedly blocked the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway in Ikeja, causing traffic disruptions in the area. However, there have been no reports of disruptions to operations at LOS. Similar protests were witnessed in the Cele-Festac area of Lagos on Tuesday, November 17, amid heightened tensions between Okada riders and the Lagos State Task Force after the latter announced it would start clearing the former from the highways after they resumed operations following a ban associated with the recent #ENDSARS protests.
Localized disruptions to transport and a heightened security presence is likely to continue in the area over the coming hours. Clashes between demonstrators and security forces are possible.
Advice
Those in Lagos are advised to monitor the situation, avoid the area in the immediate term, and adhere to all directives issued by local authorities.
