Taliban captures Maymay district (Badakhshan province) November 19

Afghanistan Alerte de sécurité

Taliban forces overrun Maymay district (Badakhshan province) on November 19, killing several security force members; further clashes expected over the near term

TIMEFRAME expected from 19/11/2020, 12h00 until 21/11/2020, 11h59 (Asia/Kabul). COUNTRY/REGION Maymay district (Badakhshan province), Badakhshan province

Event

Local officials in Badakhshan province reported on Thursday, November 19, that the Taliban had captured Maymay district. They reported that several security force members were killed in the assault, including the head of the National Security Directorate (NDS) department in the district, but no casualty figures have been confirmed. The militants seized military equipment and set the district governor's office on fire in the strategic district along the Tajikistan border. Security reinforcements have reportedly been held up by bad weather. Neither Afghan military sources nor the Taliban immediately commented on the reports.

Further heavy fighting is expected in the region in the coming days.

Context

Taliban militants launch attacks on government personnel, security forces, and civilians in Afghanistan on a near-daily basis. Such assaults are, in part, intended to undermine the perceived capacity of the ANSF - and the Afghan government more broadly - to adequately provide security in the wake of the withdrawal of most US-led NATO forces from the country.

Advice

Those in Badakhshan province are advised to monitor developments in their own particular area of operations through a range of multi-source intelligence advisories and should heed all instructions issued by local authorities or their home governments.

The security environment in Afghanistan remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
