DRC: CODECO rebels kill three civilians in attack in Ituri province November 21

DR Congo Alerte de sécurité

Suspected CODECO rebels kill three civilians in attack in Djugu territory (Ituri province) on November 21; further attacks possible in the medium term

TIMEFRAME expected from 22/11/2020, 12h00 until 24/11/2020, 11h59 (Africa/Kinshasa). COUNTRY/REGION Ituri province, Djugu territory (Ituri province)

At least three civilians were killed and several houses looted during an attack by suspected Cooperative Development Group of Congo (CODECO) rebels in Djugu territory (Ituri province) on Saturday, November 21. The attack reportedly took place in the village of Abulma 1 in the Banyali-Kilo sector, after unidentified gunmen entered the village and opened fire indiscriminately. Security operations are likely in the vicinity of the incident in the coming days.

Further attacks by armed groups are possible across the region over the medium term.

The government's limited presence in the DRC's eastern provinces, as well as the presence of numerous armed groups and local self-defense militias, has led to continued insecurity in the region.

Those in Ituri province are advised to remain vigilant for rebel and militia activity, monitor developments, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments.
