Hundreds of pro-government protesters attacked a small group of anti-government activists in Havana's Central Park on Sunday, November 22. The activists had gathered in support of individuals undertaking a hunger strike over the detention of other activists. Government supporters allegedly mobbed the group, with several activists beaten while security forces watched on. The mob then allegedly beat several members of the foreign press covering the event, with police arresting a number of anti-government activists at the end of the protest. Police had also reportedly arrested several people prior to the gathering and prevent others from taking part.
Further clashes between pro and anti-government groups cannot be ruled out over the near term. A heightened security presence and associated disruptions to transportation and business are likely in the vicinity of protest sites.
Those in Havana are advised to monitor the situation, avoid protest sites as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
