Twin IED blasts kill at least 17 and injure dozens in Bamiyan city on November 24; response operations ongoing

TIMEFRAME expected from 24/11/2020, 12h00 until 27/11/2020, 11h59 (Asia/Kabul). COUNTRY/REGION Bamiyan

At least 17 people were killed on Tuesday, November 24, when two improvised explosive device (IED) blasts hit a market in the central city of Bamiyan. Dozens of civilians are also reported to have been wounded in the explosions, with local officials confirming that more than 50 had been treated for injuries. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the bombings.

Disruptions due to ongoing response and security operations are likely in Bamiyan city in the near term.

Bamiyan has long been considered one of the most secure provinces in Afghanistan, with limited Taliban activity compared to other regions of the country, and the provincial capital is popular as a domestic tourism destination.

Those in Bamiyan are advised to avoid the area of the incident in the near term, monitor developments, and heed any directives issued by local authorities.

The security environment in Afghanistan remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
