Bangladesh: Protests denouncing closure of sugar mills possible through mid-December

Bangladesh Alerte de sécurité

Protests denouncing closure of sugar mills possible in Bangladesh through mid-December. Transport disruptions, clashes possible.

TIMEFRAME expected from 4/12/2020, 1h11 until 15/1/2021, 6h00 (UTC). COUNTRY/REGION Bangladesh

Sugar mill worker and sugarcane farmer protests are possible across Bangladesh through at least mid-December to denounce the government’s decision to shut down six sugar mills. The government decided to shut down the mills, which are located in Bochaganj, Gopalpur, Ishwardi, Kushtia, Mahimaganj, and Panchagarh, to reduce financial losses. Mill workers have protested outside the Pabna sugar mill in Ishwardi and blocked the highway connecting Pabna and Ishwardi in recent days. Confrontations between police and protesters have been reported. Demonstrators have threatened to block railway lines if the government does not reopen the mills. Further protests will likely take place in cities where sugar mills have been closed. Demonstrations will likely involve dozens of people. Rallies may also occur at other sugar mills in the coming weeks.

Security personnel will likely monitor protests and may try to disperse larger or more disruptive rallies. Clashes between police and protesters are possible, especially if security forces forcibly attempt to disperse demonstrators. Localized transport disruptions are possible, especially if protesters block or march along roadways. Rail disruptions may also occur if demonstrators block railway lines.

Avoid protests due to possible violence. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately. Follow all security personnel instructions. Monitor trusted local media sources for updates on protests and road conditions, as organizers may not announce demonstrations in advance. Allow additional travel time near protests. Confirm the status of rail services near protest locations.
