Peru: Protest in Lima over possible Fujimori pardon July 7

Protests planned for July 7 in Lima to denounce the potential pardon of former President Alberto Fujimori; transportation disruptions possible

TIMEFRAME expected from 5/7/2017, 12h00 until 7/7/2017, 11h59 (America/Lima). COUNTRY/REGION Lima

Event

A protest is planned for Friday, July 7, in the capital Lima as President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski considers pardoning ex-President Alberto Fujimori for crimes committed under his regime. The demonstration is expected to take place at Plaza San Martín, starting at 17:00 (local time), and involve multiple human rights groups. Clashes are possible between pro- and anti-Fujimori protesters, as well as between protesters and police. Transportation is likely to be disrupted near Plaza San Martín.

Associated protests may also be organized elsewhere in the country.

Context

Fujimori is a controversial figure in Peruvian politics. While credited with restoring Peru's macroeconomic stability and defeating a Maoist insurgency, Fujimori was sentenced in 2009 to over 16 years in prison for corruption during his term from 1990-2000. Additionally, Fujimori has been accused of multiple human rights violations during his administration.

Advice

Individuals in Lima are advised to avoid all demonstrations as a precaution.
