French authorities announced that increased security measures will be implemented in Strasbourg on Saturday, July 1, to protect over 40 political delegations visiting the city this weekend to pay homage to the late German Chancellor Helmut Kohl. The ceremony is planned to start at 11:00 (local time) and to end at 13:00 on Saturday.

More than 2000 security officers have  been deployed. The perimeter around the European Parliament will not be accessible to the public and transportation could be affected throughout the city. Surrounding motorways will be affected by closures to allow for delegation travel.

The terrorist threat level in France is currently assessed at a four on a five-point scale, indicating a "high risk" of a terrorist attack. France has been under a state of emergency since the November 13, 2015, terrorist attacks in Paris that killed 130 people. A series of incidents targeting French security forces have also taken place in the French capital in recent months.
