South Korea: Labor union to hold nationwide strike June 30

Event

The Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) is planning to hold a nationwide strike on Friday, June 30. KCTU’s main rally will be held in Seoul at Gwanghwamun Square starting at 15:00 (local time). An estimated 40,000 union members will attend the event. Expect localized traffic disruptions and increased security measures around all demonstrations.

Context

Cafeteria workers who are members of KCTU started a two-day strike on Thursday, June 29. Around 14,200 workers at public schools caused almost 2000 schools to be without cafeteria services.

KCTU is the second-largest labor union in South Korea. Around 734,000 workers are members of the union. The union is calling for the government to raise the minimum wage and improve conditions for irregular workers. KCTU leaders are also demanding that irregular workers be allowed to join unions.
