Event

Costa Rican teachers represented by the APSE union (Asociación de Profesores de Segunda Enseñanza) will be on strike nationwide on Tuesday, June 27. Classes are expected to be suspended in the vast majority of schools. Furthermore, an associated protest will be held in the capital San José, in front of the Ministry of Public Education (Plaza Rofas building on Paseo Colón street). Up to 7000 teachers, bused in from all over the country, are expected to take part. The demonstration will likely remain non-violent, although clashes with police cannot be ruled out. Localized traffic disruptions are also possible.

Context

Travelers and expatriates should note that political activism by foreign nationals is prohibited under Costa Rican law. Foreigners who take part in demonstrations or other political activities, including peaceful rallies, risk detention.

Advice

Individuals in San José - and Costa Rica more generally - are advised to avoid all demonstrations.
