Members of the Fair Country and Bussco trade unions (Patria Justa and Bloque Unitario Sindical y Social Costariccense) have announced rallies set to take place on Thursday, June 29, throughout the country. They are being organized to denounce proposed reforms affecting the Costa Rican Department of Social Security (CCSS). In the capital San José, a march is expected to begin at 09:00 (local time) and run from Torre Mercedes on Paseo Colón to the CCSS headquarters on Avenida Segunda. Demonstrations will likely remain non-violent, although clashes with police cannot be ruled out. Localized traffic disruptions are also possible, particularly in the capital.
Authorities have planned to reduce CCSS expenditures by altering benefits criteria for disabled and senior populations, as well as death benefits. Proposed changes include raising the retirement age and reducing payouts to the current 224,000 beneficiaries.
Individuals are advised to avoid all demonstrations and plan for potential traffic disruptions.
