On Sunday, June 25, a forest fire led to the evacuation of at least 1000 people near the town of Moguer, with no deaths or injuries reported so far. The fire has spread to the Donana Nature Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Spain’s most important nature reserves.

Authorities have deployed 21 air units and more than 550 firefighters, soldiers, and police officers to fight the fire and protect the reserve. Officials stated that shifting winds, dry weather, and high temperatures are making the fire difficult to control.

The Donana Nature Reserve holds multiple endangered species and is one of the most important areas for Europe’s bird populations.

Neighboring Portugal suffered its deadliest forest fire in recent history after a fire that began June 17 killed 64 people.

Individuals are advised to monitor developments to the situation.
