TIMEFRAME expected from 15/6/2017, 12h00 until 15/6/2017, 11h59 (Asia/Shanghai). COUNTRY/REGION Xuzhou, Jiangsu province

According to Chinese state media, at least seven people were killed and dozens more were injured in an explosion at a kindergarten in Xuzhou, Jiangsu province, at around 16:50 (local time) on Thursday, June 15. Media reports indicate many parents were collecting their children from the Chuangxin Kindergarten when the blast occurred near the entrance, killing two instantly. Five people later died of their wounds and nine are reportedly being treated for severe injuries. The cause of the explosion – whether accidental or intentional – has not been confirmed and an investigation is ongoing.

Explosions and other similar incidents are common in China due to lax enforcement of safety standards in buildings and at work sites.

In 2010, nearly 20 children were killed in various attacks on schools in the country, leading government and school officials to increase security and add security gates and other barriers.

Individuals present in Jiangsu province are advised to avoid the explosion site and monitor developments to the situation.
