Event

Increased security measures have been implemented for the G7 summit taking place in Bologna June 11-12. Due to security concerns, protests have been banned in the city center since Sunday, June 11, and the ban is expected to remain in place throughout the day on Monday, June 12. Localized traffic disruptions are likely in the area and anti-G7 protests are possible elsewhere.

Context

The G7 is comprised of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Representatives from various other countries have also been invited, such as Chile, Ethiopia, the Maldives, and Rwanda.

G7 ministerial meetings on environmental issues are taking place and come only ten days after the announcement of the withdrawal of the United States from the Paris Agreement.

Advice

Individuals in Bologna are advised to avoid all demonstrations as a precaution. Travelers should be aware that large public gatherings in Europe have been targeted by terrorist attacks in recent years; remain vigilant and report suspicious activity to the relevant authorities.
