Event

Around 1500 people were injured in Turin after a firecracker provoked a stampede on the night of Saturday, June 3, during a viewing of the Juventus' Champions League final against Real Madrid. According to local media reports, at least seven people were seriously injured in the stampede, which took place at the Piazza San Carlo.

There has been public criticism of the Italian authorities for not implementing more stringent security measures, and security is likely to be tight around Piazza San Carlo in the coming days.

Context

The last major disaster for Juventus fans was the 1985 Heysel stadium disaster, during which 39 people, most of them Italian fans, died after being crushed against a wall that then collapsed before the European Cup final against Liverpool.

Advice

Individuals in Turin are advised to adhere to all instructions issued by authorities, and avoid all large gatherings.
