Mozambique: 52 detained following attacks on police stations /update 2

Security officials report 52 arrests following a string of deadly attacks on police stations

12 oct. 05h38 UTC
TIMEFRAME expected from 7/10/2017, 12h00 until 9/10/2017, 11h59 (Africa/Maputo). COUNTRY/REGION Cabo Delgado province

According to a police spokesperson, 52 people had been arrested as of Tuesday, October 10, following a string of attacks on three police stations in Mocímboa da Praia (Cabo Delgado province). At least 14 militants were killed in the attacks, which took place on October 5-6, along with two police officers. Temporary police road blocks were erected in the area, and police have since dispatched special forces to the region to deter further attacks. Investigations are ongoing.

Police officials previously announced that they suspected the incidents to be coordinated, and that the gunmen were linked to the Somalia-based Al-Shabaab militant group. In Tuesday’s announcement, however, the police rebuffed this earlier claim of links to international terrorist groups.

Sporadic clashes between government security forces and various armed militias loyal to the opposition rebel movement Renamo were seen throughout much of 2016. Following the December 2016 truce between the government and Renamo’s militia, such clashes have become infrequent.

Individuals present in the area should monitor the situation and follow any advice issued by local authorities. In general, those present in Mozambique are advised to remain vigilant at all times (especially during public events and when in crowded places) and to report any suspicious objects or behavior to the authorities.
