The Uruguayan meteorological institute INUMET has issued “orange” alerts - the second highest level - for five western and central departments due to storms forecast to hit the region on Tuesday, October 17. The alerts are currently in place for the departments of Salto, Paysandú, Río Negro, Tacuarembó, and Durazno. Up to 6 cm (2.5 in) of rain is expected to fall in certain areas within a short period and could result in flooding, particularly near rivers. Violent thunderstorms, hail, and strong winds are also forecast. Associated power outages and transportation disruptions cannot be ruled out.
Floods are relatively common in Uruguay and can occur year round.
Individuals in affected areas are advised to maintain a safe distance from river banks, keep abreast of the situation via local media outlets, and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities.
