Unidentified armed men reportedly launched several attacks in Cabo Delgado province in recent weeks. According to police sources, the assailants burned down at least 27 houses and a Christian church in the villages of Mitumbate and Makulo overnight November 29-30. At least two people were killed and four others wounded in the attack.
On November 24, the government ordered three mosques located in the city of Pemba to close on the grounds that they were frequently visited by members of an armed group that attacked police stations in Mocímboa da Praia (Cabo Delgado province) in October. It remains unclear if the latest attacks are in retaliation to the government’s order. Further attacks cannot be ruled out.
A string of attacks on three police stations took place in Mocimboa da Praia on October 5-6, during which 14 assailants were killed along with two police officers. Security forces arrested at least 52 people following the attack.
Individuals present in the area should monitor the situation and follow any advice issued by local authorities. In general, those present in Mozambique are advised to remain vigilant at all times (especially during public events and when in crowded places) and to report any suspicious objects or behavior to the authorities.
