Raw sewage is overflowing onto streets and adjacent beach areas on Barbados' southern coast as of the evening of Wednesday, January 10. According to the US Embassy in Bridgetown, a mechanical failure has caused the overflow, which is affecting the southern coast between Hastings and St. Lawrence Gap area. It is currently unclear when the mechanical failure will be fixed to stop the sewage overflow.


Individuals in Barbados are advised to refrain from water activities in the affected area, monitor developments to the situation, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities. Wash hands and all clothing and other items thoroughly that have come into contact with waste. Seek immediate medical attention if feeling ill after traveling through the affected area.
