A protest by farmers and other groups is set to take place in the central city of Durazno throughout the day on Tuesday, January 23. Thousands of demonstrators are expected to travel from around the country to take part. Over the past few days farmers have been taking to the country’s highways with their tractors to disrupt traffic in protest. Further such roadblocks are likely in Durazno and elsewhere in the country in the coming hours and days. Some low-intensity violence, e.g. scuffles between protests and police, is possible.
The farmers are denouncing what they see as the government’s mismanagement of the economy.
Individuals in Durazno and Uruguay more generally are advised to avoid all protests and be prepared for possible traffic disruptions.
