A man threw a petrol bomb at the Yangon residence of Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi’s on Thursday, February 1. The attack caused little damage and the motive remains unclear.
The villa is where Suu Kyi was held under house arrest for 15 years by the military junta. She led the National League for Democracy to a majority win in Myanmar’s first openly contested election in November 2015. She has since been widely criticized by the international community over her perceived failure to speak up on behalf of Myanmar’s Rohingya Muslim community. Nearly 700,000 Rohingyas have fled the country amid a brutal crackdown, which may be classified as ethnic cleansing.
Individuals present in Yangon are advised to abide by all instructions issued by security forces.
