A deadly flu (influenza) outbreak this winter season has led to the deaths of 111 people since early January 2018, including two children. To help contain the spread of the virus, kindergartens and primary schools were ordered closed on Wednesday, February 7. They will remain closed throughout the Chinese Near Year break (i.e. until at least March 12).
It is feared that the outbreak has not yet peaked and as such could worsen in the coming days.
An ongoing cold spell in Hong Kong has coincided with an increase in cases of influenza. Hundreds of individuals have sought treatment in hospitals, which have been struggling since early January to manage the influx. The average inpatient bed occupancy rate rose to 106 percent as of January 31.
Individuals present in Hong Kong are advised to keep abreast of the situation, take hygienic precautions to protect themselves from the flu (such as regular hand washing), and be prepared for longer waiting times at hospitals.
