Corporate Investigations: Five Situations Requiring Specialized Intervention

1. Internal, external, or time theft
Theft is a criminal act that can result in various disciplinary measures, ranging from termination to legal action. The consequences depend on the seriousness of the offense, the type of theft, and the organization’s internal policies.
The most common forms are product theft and time theft.
Employees with access to goods or inventory may commit thefts that are relatively easy to conceal. However, what is even more frequent is time theft, i.e. when an employee spends excessive time on social media, breaks, meals, or personal conversations, or asks a colleague to cover for them during unauthorized absences.
Such behaviors often go unnoticed, either because co-workers protect one another or because they take advantage of their supervisor’s trust.
Several investigative approaches may be used in these cases. Surveillance can be appropriate when an employer has reasonable grounds to suspect that an employee is performing personal activities during work hours, working for another company, or neglecting their duties in an autonomous position. In other cases, the installation of discreet cameras or monitoring software may be effective, provided all legal and privacy requirements are met. For more complex situations, calling in an undercover agent can help document the facts accurately.
2. Abusive or fraudulent absenteeism
Whether it stems from a false workplace injury, exaggerated limitations, or an unfounded prolonged disability claim, fraudulent absenteeism generates significant costs for organizations. If left unaddressed, it can also undermine corporate culture and employee morale.
In a labor shortage context, managers must act promptly. Surveillance remains one of the most effective methods when circumstances allow. However, the employer must demonstrate reasonable grounds, plan the intervention carefully, and act in compliance with privacy laws.
In some cases, when there is suspicion that an absent employee is working elsewhere or running a personal business, pretext visits or communications may be used to verify and document the situation—often in combination with surveillance to build a solid evidence file.
3. Trafficking or use of controlled substances
The use, possession, or sale of drugs, alcohol, or controlled substances in the workplace remains unacceptable and dangerous, even if increasingly common.
Despite internal policies and clear prohibitions, the legalization of certain substances has blurred boundaries for some employees. The result: rising cases of substance use at work and the ensuing increased risk of accidents.
A combination of undercover agents, hidden cameras, and surveillance is often effective in addressing these behaviors. Once the evidence is collected, investigators who conduct interviews can intervene to close the case professionally and in full compliance with the law.
4. Workplace harassment
Regardless of its form, harassment has serious moral and legal consequences. Such situations are often kept silent until it is too late to intervene, sometimes leading to legal action against the company or its leaders.
The impacts are numerous: high employee turnover, reputational damage, recruitment challenges, and in severe cases, negative media exposure.
A swift and structured response is essential to protect victims and stop inappropriate behavior. Depending on the case, several investigative methods may be used. In some situations, an undercover agent may help gather key information, while in most cases, investigators conduct interviews with victims, witnesses, and HR representatives, often in collaboration with an external specialized firm.
5. Vandalism or deliberate equipment damage
Often linked to union negotiations, grievances, or a general climate of dissatisfaction, acts of vandalism or sabotage create significant financial losses and safety risks.
Depending on the context, the employer or a specialized investigation firm may implement a progressive investigation strategy. When targeted areas are known, hidden cameras can be highly effective. More complex cases may require the intervention of undercover agents, followed by interviews conducted by specialized investigators. If damage occurs outside the company’s facilities, static surveillance cameras may also be deployed to identify those responsible.
