NATIONAL SAFETY MONTH: What is Workplace Impairment?

June 17, 2022

For more than a century, the National Safety Council, America's premier safety advocate, has focused on three areas: the workplace, roads, and impairment. NSC – of which GardaWorld is a member – provides companies with resources that employees can use to address real-world, workplace hazards.

With June being National Safety Month, the NSC has prepared free resources such as insights-based tools to help people foster a culture of safety for everyone – from leaders and safety professionals to individual workers. One of their topics is workplace impairment.

What is workplace impairment?

A reduced state of physical and/or mental functioning is frequently referred to as impairment. It’s often a hidden risk that keeps employees from performing at their best. On the job, someone who is impaired may struggle to complete activities safely, endangering themselves, their coworkers, and the public.

There are a variety of factors that can contribute to workplace impairment, such as fatigue, mental weariness, substance use, and medical conditions. Learning how to prevent and recognize these factors among your team is a key factor in ensuring a safe and productive work environment.
