From August 21 to September 4, François East, treasurer at GardaWorld’s world headquarters in Montreal, climbed the Mount Chachacomani in Bolivia to support the project “Le Sommet des tout-petits”.
Carried out on behalf of the “Fondation du Centre jeunesse de Montréal”, this expedition has raised more than $135,000. Francois East was able to raise $18,200 by himself for the foundation, in addition to paying the costs related to his trip.
All funds raised benefit children from 0 to 5 years and their families being taken care of by the Centre jeunesse de Montréal. This year, $10,000 were also given to a local children's hospital to help carrying out major construction work.
Among the group of 14 climbers from Quebec, eight of them, including François, reached the summit which rises to 6,074 meters above sea level. They crossed the last 1,000 meters of the mountain and reached its summit in a final effort of 11 hours, mostly done at night! This achievement required a week of acclimatization at an altitude of 5,000 meters and a great psychological strength necessary to overcome the cold, the snow, tiredness, headaches, etc.
Climbing initiatives in Bolivia of the Fondation du Centre Jeunesse de Montréal take place every two years and they helped raise more than $500,000 since 2009. This year marked the third participation of Francis in this project after his 2011 and 2013 experiences. He would like to participate again within two to three years.
GardaWorld congratulates François for his achievement and thanks him for his involvement in such a great cause!
